Most people know Feb. 2 as Super Bowl Sunday or groundhog day. But Sunday isn’t just about football or winter prognostications, it’s also National Ukelele Day.
While it might not be as glamorous or hyped as tonight’s Super Bowl LIV halftime show with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, nearly 100 people celebrated Ukelele day at Saskatoon’s Market Mall.
“Today we are having a Uke-Can-Do-It ukulele event to celebrate world Ukulele day,” said Mona Loshack, Market Mall’s marketing director.
“We just wanted to have some fun with it. How can you not have fun with a ukulele? So we thought, ‘let’s throw it out there and see if they like it.'”

Loshack said people came out from all over to participate. Those included groups from Dinsmore, Milden, Davidson and Saskatoon. They even had a few walk-ins they weren’t expecting.
She said the event has been in the works for about six weeks. The participators were led by Harrison James with participants playing seven songs. The setlist included classics like ‘It’s a Small World After All’, ‘You Are My Sunshine’, and ‘Home on the Range’.
