Regina man takes videos to highlight issue facing pedestrians

A Regina man is pointing out what he calls a dicey intersection for pedestrians in downtown Regina.
 
Gerald Heinrichs took several videos over a few days of vehicles blocking the crosswalk at Albert Street and 11th Avenue, just south of Saskatchewan Drive. The videos show pedestrians having to weave in and out of the vehicles to cross the street.
 
Heinrichs works just a couple blocks away and uses the crosswalk all the time. He said it can be an uncomfortable feeling trying to walk through the traffic.
 
There were several instances where people carrying children or pushing strollers had to manoeuvre around vehicles.
 
“It certainly, if you’re trying to transport young children by foot into downtown, if you’re elderly, if you’re disabled, it’s a serious issue I think,” said Heinrichs.
 
“The word I use in my video is dicey crosswalk, and it is a bit like rolling the dice when you go across the crosswalk so I certainly wish some kind of change could come soon.”
 
Heinrichs doesn’t know what can be done, though he said giving out tickets probably wouldn’t help.
 
“I think it has to do with the timing of the lights for northbound traffic on Albert Street, that’s my guess. Surely there has to be something that can be done to make it a little better,” said Heinrichs.
