The City of Saskatoon is warning residents of a new scam which involves a cash prize for paying utility bills on time.
A concerned citizen contacted the city after receiving a call from someone who claimed to be with the company “Winners International.”
They were told they had won a huge amount of money and they could cash the cheque as soon as they sent one per cent to cover lawyer fees.
The city says neither they or Saskatoon Light and Power would ever make these types of requests.
“Scammers typically use the information they gather this way to get money and or commit identity theft,” a city news release said.
“An internet search reveals Winners International Payout Services has been involved in numerous reported scams very similar to today’s.”
The city is reminding residents to never give out personal or banking information or credit card numbers over the phone, in text or by email.
Anyone who gets a call like this should contact Saskatoon police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
