Saskatoon’s tactical support unit busted down the doors of a Rosewood apartment building during a drug bust on Thursday night.
The tactical unit had search warrants for two different suites in the building that they executed simultaneously. The scene proved to be quite the shock to many of the residents of the building.
“We were just laying on the couch watching TV when we heard three significantly loud pops. So I hopped up saying that sounded like gunshots, whats going on,” said Tyler Hazelwanter, one resident of the apartment on Herold Road.
“I looked out the window and saw two armored police officers holding rifles up at our building and witnessed two more pops come from them and then a really loud bang from the apartment above which made us run away from the windows.”
Police say the bangs heard were likely rubber bullets being fired to break screened windows, some sort of flash bang grenade inside the suite and doors of the suites being kicked in.
The extreme nature of the event and the lack of information surrounding what went down has left Hazelwanter and his wife, a little on edge.
“Realistically every bang that goes off we are looking out the window even if it’s just someone closing their garbage bin. We are expecting to see a van sitting in front again. It’s been stressful,” he said.
“It would have been nice to have a presence that night even if it was someone stationed at the door just to reassure us that there was nothing going on over the night. Because there was not a lot of sleep that happened over the weekend just because we had no idea what was going on.”
The tactical support unit seized 1180 grams of cocaine cut with painkillers called powdered buff, 58.5 grams of crack cocaine, 2,466 rounds of ammunition and over $13,000 in cash.
Two men, aged 25 and 30, were arrested and face charges of cocaine trafficking, possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000, and possession of a prohibited device.
Police say the illegal activity in the two suites were connected.
