Tonight I’m going to enjoy watching Ricky Ray because nobody is sure if we’ll get to see him again and if he’ll return next season to the CFL.
Ray will turn 37 on Saturday and is closing in on an off-season where he’ll make the decision to keep going or hang ’em up. Usually at that age, the quarterback of Ray’s calibre will keep going but after year after year of significant injury you wonder if Ray wants to get back at it this off-season with no team looking like they’re wanting to take on Ray as a #1 quarterback again.
Even the Toronto Argonauts have labelled Drew Willy as the future QB, making a big trade a few weeks ago.
I remember when Ray burst on the scene in 2002, it was actually here in Saskatchewan against the Roughriders relieving an injured Jason Maas, he went two for four and threw one interception, an inauspicious start to say the least.
The next week, he went to B.C. and threw for four touchdowns, the rest they say is history.
If Ray comes back next season, it’ll be great to see him fight for a #1 job again, if not, I’m going to enjoy watching his final snaps, remembering how the kid from Happy Camp, California became a future CFL Hall of Famer.
