At the end of 2019, we’ll look back at the year in sports and talk about our favourite moments of the year.
We’ll rank them, as we usually do in sports. Maybe it’s a top five, maybe a top 10.
This year will come down to Bianca Andreescu’s win at the US Open and the Toronto Raptors’ NBA championship.
One story was more popular, that being the NBA title. Thousands turned out around Canada to cheer on the Raptors to their first championship.
But Andreescu will be my favourite story of the year. A no-name underdog who was ranked 152nd entering the year, who would go to the final in Auckland, win a major event at Indian Wells, capture her own country’s crown at the Rogers Cup and then cap off the year No. 5 in the world with a straight-sets stunner over Serena Williams at the US Open. She is the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title. And she’s only 19 years old.
It has been a phenomenal year so far, Canadian sports fans. I wonder what the final four months have in store for us.
