Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) is launching its new facial recognition software on Aug. 24, which will be in place when issuing new driver’s licences and photo ID cards.
Facial recognition technology protects Saskatchewan residents from identity theft, and it also prevents people from getting multiple licences or ID cards.
Customers won’t notice anything different if they get a new photo taken or receive a new card. Customers are not required to get a new photo or card until their current one expires.
There is no additional cost to customers, and the driver’s licence and photo ID cards continue to be valid for 5-years.
SGI announced it would move towards facial recognition technology in October 2015.
