Grass fire season expects to be bad around Saskatoon

As the weather starts to warm up, more and more grass fires are just waiting to pop up.
 
We’ve seen a handful already around Saskatoon including one west of Valley Road on Tuesday.
 
And after a fairly dry winter, Saskatoon Fire Assistant Chief Dave Bykowy expects it to be a bad season.
 
“That’s due to less snow and no precipitation to speak of,” said Bykowy.  “We haven’t got any new growth yet, so it’s all dry fuel ready to go.”
 
Bykowy insists people are vigilant with any kind of heat to help prevent grass fires from starting up in the first place.
 
“Whether you’re outside doing work on something where you’re creating sparks or heat, you have to be aware of your surroundings.” said Bykowy.  “The other thing is where can the fire go if it does ignite?”
 
Bykowy says it’s best to simply avoid using fire to burn and clean things up.
