This week’s throne speech included a commitment by the provincial government for a strategy to help prevent crashes on highways.
The announcement came in light of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, which saw 16 people killed and 13 injured on Apr. 6, when the SJHL hockey team’s bus and a semi collided at the intersection of Highway 35 and Highway 335 near Nipawin.
The intersection is in the Rural Municipality of Connaught, where Deputy Reeve Ian Boxhall said he still believed there was nothing inherently dangerous about that particular intersection.
“It had warning signs, oversized stop signs with lights at the intersection,” he said.
However, Boxhall said he still welcomed the provincial review and hoped it would make all of Saskatchewan’s highways safer.
“You know, that bus crash affected Saskatchewan and it affected Canada. And I think people would be happy to see the government look at reviewing those intersecting highways and trying to look at a way they can make those safer for all motorists.”
More details on the province’s strategy are expected to be released in the next few weeks.
The province has spent $700,000 so far this year clearing sight lines at various intersections and improving safety.
