A public art display that’s been a fixture in downtown Saskatoon for more than 20 years now lies in ruins after is was toppled overnight.
Two of the three Tyndall stone sculpture pillars named “Visionaries” were destroyed some time between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
In a release distributed late Tuesday, city community initiatives manager Kevin Kitchen said “we are somewhat relieved it appears the damage was accidental.”
According top initial accounts, police were called to the area just after 8 p.m. Monday for a multi-vehicle crash that caused damage to the sculpture.
The sculpture by local artist Leslie Potter has stood at the corner of Second Avenue and 21st Street since it was installed in 1994. Kitchen said the city will follow up with their insurance company and Potter to see what to do next.
