While a gift card might be an easy gift to get for some people on your Christmas list, the province’s Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority wants you to keep a few things in mind when buying them.
- Make sure to buy the gift card from an established store, as sometimes a store may close before a person gets to use the card. The authority suggests you consider whether the person you’re buying the card for will be able to use it in a timely matter.
- Read the fine print on the back of the card. Some cards have restrictions for when they can be used, and what they can be used for.
- As long as they’re purchased in Saskatchewan, gift cards cannot expire, and cannot carry monthly fees or additional activation charges. The only exception are gift cards and certificates given away for free – like raffle prizes.
