At least one Canadian couple in Mexico was breathing easier Saturday morning after Hurricane Patricia missed them Friday night.
“The day started with a little bit of a drizzle of a rain, and it rained a little bit harder through the night, but we had zero for wind … It just seemed so still you thought it would be a storm coming, but there was nothing at all other than some rain,” Francis Bast said from his home just outside Puerto Vallarta.
Bast, from Regina, said the storm didn’t get within 80 kilometres of his home.
On Friday he said he brought everything inside and took down his satellite dish to prepare.
“Some people in our area boarded up their windows with plywood, some people put tape on,” he said.
He said they waited for hours and nothing happened. “I guess better be prepared than not.”
The storm started out as a Category 5 storm, the strongest Pacific storm ever recorded, with winds topping 270 km/h. But it came ashore in a sparsely populated area, and soon weakened to a tropical depression.
Bast said everything was good Saturday morning. “It’s really sunny here, and it’s a nice day. I might go golfing.”
