Police say a gunman who shot several people at an Oregon community college is dead.
Douglas County sheriff John Hanlin was on hand for a press conference about the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College. He told reporters the situation was contained and the shooter had been killed.
10 people were killed and more than 20 others injured in the shooting, according to Oregon State Police spokesman Bill Fugate.
Oregon Governor Kate Brown said the 20-year-old shooter died after a gunfight with police.
CNN reported that investigators recovered four guns at the scene. They’re also looking into the man’s social media profiles, the man is alleged to have had online conversations about his planned shooting spree.
Douglas County Fire Marshal Ray Shoufler said emergency workers arrived to find casualties spread among multiple classrooms. He said two patients died en route to hospital.
Postings from the nearby Mercy Medical Center said they had taken in 9 patients with another three on the way. Sacred Heart Medical Center, located about 110 kilometres from the shooting scene also reported taking in three patients with two more on the way.
Umpqua College is in Roseburg, Ore. It has an enrollment of about 3,000 students. Roseburg is a city of 22,000 people just under 300 kilometres south of Portland.
