With winter storms already hitting central Alberta, Environment Canada’s chief meteorologist says Saskatoon can expect heavy snow this weekend.
David Phillips told 650 CKOM’s Brent Loucks Thursday the Saskatoon and Yorkton areas could see snow start falling by Friday, with between five and 15 centimetres (or two to six inches) of snow expected Saturday.
Phillips said the system moving into province will likely mean difficult conditions on the highways.
“It’s not just the snow. It’s the strong winds that come with it. Zero visibility. Heavy blowing snow. My gosh, it can produce some white-knuckling kind of driving.”
On the bright said, the snow dump will mean welcome precipitation for producers worried about a lack of moisture this winter.
“I think, for travel, it’s an issue. But for farmers, it’s white gold,” Phillips said.
Environment Canada forecast a 60 per cent chance of flurries Sunday, with the snowfall expected to clear up by Monday.
