Regina woman helps rescue child from fiery crash

There can be a lot of scary stories in the news, but like Mr. Fred Rogers once said while recalling a story told by his mother, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

One of them is Regina’s Starla Littletent. She was driving along Lewvan Drive with her husband on Saturday when she saw the aftermath of a crash that happened moments earlier.

Two vehicles collided at the intersection of 1st Avenue North, sparking a fire in the engine of one car. Littletent said she saw a man get out of the car and headed around to the passenger side.

“That’s when I realized ‘oh my god he has kids,'” she said.

She jumped out of her vehicle, rushed over and rescued a three-year-old boy in a car seat while the father saved a baby next to him.

They moved to a safe distance from the fiery crash and that’s where Littletent used her first-aid training for the very first time. She checked their heartbeat and for broken bones but no one was seriously hurt. They were taken away in an ambulance by paramedics to get checked out.

“The little guy was in shock and he was shaking but I managed to get him to calm down,” she explained.

Littletent, who is a mother of six, said it all happened very fast. Her instincts kicked in along with the adrenaline to save the child in danger.

“I had to,” she said.”I wouldn’t leave my children if that was the case.”

Littletent said she has a big heart and would help anyone whether they are family or strangers. She said she learned that from her mother.

“I would just hope that, you know, if ever I was in need of help, somebody would assist myself as well.”
