Almost three years to the day since the workplace death of a young man at a Saskatchewan tire-recycling operation, his former employer has been given a six-figure fine.
Cade Sprackman, 18, had only been on the job a few weeks at the Shercom Industries Inc. plant just north of Saskatoon when his hand and arm got caught in the conveyor belt of a tire-shredding machine.
He died on Jan. 27, 2015.
Shercom pleaded guilty in October 2016 to violating Saskatchewan’s occupational health and safety rules by failing to ensure a safe workplace.
On Thursday, a provincial court judge ordered Shercom to pay a $420,000 fine.
