Tweets from US President Donald J. Trump Wednesday morning sent a clear message to the country’s transgender community.
Over three tweets, Trump informed the public the United States government will no longer accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.
Jack Saddleback with OUTSaskatoon called the tweets a “deplorable attack on human rights for trans people,” adding it sends the message they are second-class citizens.
“That they can be excluded and they can’t be who they are if they have any dreams or aspirations to serve in the military,” he said.
Saddleback noted Saskatoon can play a role by letting the Transgender community down south know they have a support system here.
“They are welcome here and we accept them for who they are,” Saddleback said.
In Canada, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) has a policy to prevent discrimination and harassment based on gender identity. It even contains guidance on how to accommodate the needs of people during their transitions.
On Wednesday, the CAF tweeted a photo of a naval band marching in a Pride parade with the caption, “We welcome Canadians of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Join us!”
