Regina’s new Mosaic Stadium is poised to potentially host one of the world’s biggest events.
The joint North American bid for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has named 44 potential host cities, including seven in Canada.
On Tuesday, the United Bid Committee of Canada, Mexico and the United States released its list of 49 potential venues in 44 cities.
On the list were nine Canadian facilities, including Regina’s Mosaic Stadium.
Others named were McMahon Stadium in Calgary, Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Olympic and Saputo stadiums in Montreal, TD Place in Ottawa, Rogers Centre and BMO Field in Toronto, and BC Place in Vancouver.
Absent from the list were Hamilton’s Tim Hortons Field, which hosted soccer at the 2015 Toronto Pan American Games, and Investors Group Field in Winnipeg.
The City of Regina has until Sept. 5 to declare its interest in hosting games.
Canada would host 10 of the 80 World Cup matches under the proposed bid, with Mexico hosting another 10. The United States would host the remaining 60.
The United Bid is one of two official bids for the 2026 World Cup, with Morocco also in the running.
