VICTORIA — The British Columbia Conservatives have dumped a teenage candidate in the provincial election after he was accused of posting “offensive” remarks online about the Holocaust and Hitler.
The party said Thursday that Jordan McIntosh was no longer the Conservative candidate in Vancouver-Strathcona and if elected he would not sit in the caucus.
The Conservatives announced his removal from the slate less than an hour after NDP candidate Callista Ryan, who is running in Vancouver-Quilchena, posted screenshots on social media platform X showing what she said were McIntosh’s remarks.
One post under the username “DeathNight” said Hitler “may have not intended death” during the Holocaust, and that “lots of Jews died” not because Hitler “hated them specifically” but because there were so many of them.
An Apple Music artist profile for a musician called “DeathNight” listed Jordan Zheng McIntosh as their lyricist, composer and producer.
Jordan Zheng McIntosh is the full name of the former Conservative candidate, according to Elections BC.
McIntosh’s LinkedIn profile shows he graduated from high school last year.
Ryan said in her post that it appeared McIntosh thought he could use a “nameless Twitter account to say many awful, offensive things.”
She said in an interview on Thursday that she identified McIntosh through a photo on Twitter and cross-referenced the social media account with a music account.
McIntosh declined to comment when reached by phone on Thursday, saying only that he would call back.
Ryan said she wanted to hear an apology showing that McIntosh understood his mistakes.
“We haven’t heard anything from him, but really it’s about the leadership of the B.C. Conservatives and doing the right thing, even when it’s inconvenient, because they’re not dropping other candidates like Heather Maas for saying hateful comments as well.”
Ryan was referring to 2022 comments from Maahs about the SOGI 123 program. The Conservative legislator said during a podcast that the program was “not just sex education that has gone too far” but may even be a form of grooming.
“It’s for sure grooming,” she added. “It desensitizes kids, and it’s all under the name of LGBTQ because it’s boy on boy.”
McIntosh’s removal comes after interim Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson said during Wednesday’s leaders’ debate that he would “stand against hate” and raised concerns about what he called “antisemitic behaviour” within the NDP caucus.
Doerkson had come under fire from NDP Leader David Eby in the debate over whether he tolerated “hateful” views.
Eby said online posts about Islam by Conservative campaign director Katy Merrifield were “like the worst corners of the dark web.”
Doerkson countered by asking Eby if antisemitic behaviour in his caucus qualified as hate, in reference to former New Democrat legislator Selina Robinson, who left the party in March 2024 citing antisemitism and indifference towards the problem.
Eby responded by saying that he asked Robinson to step down from cabinet in February 2024 after she made what he called “some unfortunate comments” about Palestine at a media event. Robinson had called pre-1948 Palestine a “crappy of piece of land.”
Doerkson was asked during a post-debate media availability about what he would do if his caucus members made remarks he considered hateful.
“I am absolutely committed to serving British Columbians in a respectful way … and with dignity,” he said. “I will not allow those kinds of actions in our caucus going forward for certain and I will be absolutely committed to that.”
Doerkson declined to comment about allegations from CentreBC Leader Elenore Sturko, who is openly gay and said Maahs had called her immoral over her sexual orientation.
McIntosh’s ejection also comes a week after the Conservatives kicked out another candidate, Joachim Agou, for online comments saying the driver of a car that rammed a pro-Palestinian protest group in Switzerland should have “reversed too.”
The party said if Agou won the seat in Victoria-Beacon Hill, he would not sit in the Conservative caucus.
Agou issued a statement the next day saying he was “truly sorry” and while he took responsibility for his words, he rejected NDP accusations of racism.
He said in a social media post on Oct. 9 that he should have expressed himself “more clearly and calmly,” adding that demonstrations “should not bring a city to a standstill or put lives at risk.”
