Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating an incident that occurred during a traffic stop on Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
According to a statement from the province, Battlefords RCMP officers conducted a traffic stop on the First Nation, located northwest of Saskatoon. The vehicle pulled into a driveway and came to a stop.

A man and a woman exited the vehicle but were told to remain inside. The driver told police he had a suspended licence and outstanding warrants. He was arrested without incident. The woman told police the man had a disability.
A few minutes later, a confrontation occurred between police and a 45-year-old man in the back seat, RCMP said. Police told the man he was under arrest. During the process of handcuffing him and removing him from the vehicle, he suffered a serious injury, according to the statement.
A team of six SIRT investigators will examine the incident and “the actions of police.”
“SIRT’s mandate is to investigate alleged cases of serious injury, death, sexual assault or interpersonal violence arising from the actions or omissions of on-duty and off-duty police officers, or while an individual is in police custody,” the statement said.
Investigators will issue a report within 90 days of the conclusion of the investigation.
