According to court documents, McHargue sexually assaulted the victim between Sept. 1984 and May 1988.
The victim cannot be named because of a publication ban protecting the identities of sexual assault complainants.
McHargue was arrested and charged by the Saskatoon Police Service Sex Crime Unit on Aug. 20, 2025.
Police said McHargue moved to Saskatoon in 1977 and began teaching piano and organ lessons that year at a city music store and privately from his home on Churchill Drive.
McHargue continued teaching piano and organ lessons until 2020.
For the first six months of his sentence, McHargue must remain at an approved residence 24 hours a day unless given permission to leave. For the remainder of his sentence, he must remain at his residence from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Other conditions prohibit McHargue from contacting anyone under 16 unless an approved adult is present. He is also prohibited from attending parks, school grounds, playgrounds, daycares and community centres where children are present, and from working or volunteering with anyone under 16.
McHargue was also ordered to register with Canada’s sex offender registry for life.
