It’s too soon to say the full extent of the impact U.S. tariffs may have on the City of Saskatoon.
Clae Hack, Saskatoon’s chief financial officer, said the city buys the “vast majority” of its goods and services from vendors within Canada.

“Of course, those vendors may have supply chain tariff impacts on all of a portion of their materials and goods, but it is difficult at this point to determine what those impacts will be, and how or if they will be passed on to the City of Saskatoon and other customers,” Hack said in a statement.
According to the city, around $7 million was spent on goods and services from outside of Canada in 2025, accounting for about 1.74 per cent of the City of Saskatoon’s spending on procurement that year. Of that $7 million, 93 per cent was spent in the U.S.
The largest out-of-country procurement expenditure in 2025 was for waste and recycling containers ($2,634,845.70), followed by software ($1,987,718.35), electrical utility equipment ($899,479.96), water/wastewater treatment technology ($392,809.50) and water/wastewater equipment ($303,465.20).
Other international spending last year included fitness equipment ($71,819.29), standards and membership organization ($69,336.70), utility and public works supplies ($61,149.90), research organization ($52,411.74), industrial maintenance equipment ($48,127.94), public safety/police dog training and equipment ($44,596.18), and industrial service contractors ($33,834.85).
Hack said the city will continue to monitor and assess the impacts of the tariffs on the its upcoming budget, which is expected to include a $4.5 million deficit. That shortfall is expected to be covered by the city’s reserves.
Budget deliberations typically take place near the end of November or in early December.
