Saskatchewan Rush to pick 10th in NLL dispersal draft after franchises fold

The National Lacrosse League (NLL) has announced changes that will have an impact on both the league and the Saskatchewan Rush.

Both the Ottawa Black Bears and Philadelphia Wings have discontinued operations and will not play in the upcoming season.

In a statement, the NLL announced it will play this season — the league’s 40th — with 12 teams. The league said “extensive efforts” were made to identify viable paths forward for the franchises.

“Today is a difficult day for the National Lacrosse League and, most importantly, for the fans, players, employees and partners who have supported the Ottawa Black Bears and Philadelphia Wings,” said NLL Commissioner Brett Frood.

The league didn’t close the door on the possibility of a return to either market, stating, “Ottawa and Philadelphia remain important markets to the NLL. The League will consider future opportunities in either community if the long-term conditions and partners necessary to support a sustainable franchise are established.”

The statement also outlined what will happen with the players who were on the rosters of the two teams.

“Beginning at 4 p.m. ET on Sept. 10, NLL clubs may communicate with eligible Ottawa and Philadelphia players in accordance with League dispersal procedures,” the statement read.

There will be a dispersal draft of players from the two teams on Sept. 15. The order of the draft will be “based on their regular-season winning percentages over the two most recently completed seasons, with the most recent season weighted at 70 percent. The reigning NLL Finals champion will select last,” according to the statement.

The Saskatchewan Rush will select 10th in the NLL dispersal draft, while the Oshawa FireWolves will have the first overall pick.

The league said, “Following the NLL Dispersal Draft, clubs may sign selected players and negotiate with selected unrestricted free agents, subject to applicable NLL rules and procedures.”
