For the second time in his Western Hockey League career, Tyrone Sobry will get the chance to suit up for his hometown team.
On Tuesday, the Saskatoon Blades announced they have acquired the 20-year-old defenceman from the Prince George Cougars in exchange for a 2028 sixth round draft pick.

Sobry’s addition comes amid news that fellow pending overager Tristen Doyle would not be returning to the Blades this fall, after a late spot opened up at Merrimack University.
“We were informed on Friday that Tristen Doyle would be leaving for NCAA, so we immediately inquired about adding Tyrone back,” said Blades president and general manager Colin Priestner in a statement.
“Our coaches felt (Sobry) was exactly what our defensive core needed as a 20-year-old. He plays hard, simple hockey and is extremely well liked in our room. He will be a strong shutdown presence for us this year.”
Sobry, who is from Saskatoon, played in 29 games for the Blades last season after being traded from the Prince Albert Raiders on Oct. 14, 2025, and netted three goals and seven points over that span.
He was then dealt to Prince George at the WHL trade deadline on Jan. 8, 2026 in exchange for a 2029 fourth round pick and a 2026 ninth round pick, which Saskatoon passed on at the 2026 WHL Draft.
Sobry played in 28 regular season games with the Cougars where he registered one goal and four points, before he added another two points in Prince George’s 12 playoff games.
“It’s good to be home,” Sobry said. “I can’t wait to be back in the blue and gold.”
A graduate of the Saskatoon U18 AAA Contacts program, Sobry also spent time in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with the Humboldt Broncos.

He’ll look to fill a void left by Doyle, who departs the Blades after one season with the organization after being acquired in a trade with the Lethbridge Hurricanes last summer.
Doyle was one of Saskatoon’s most productive defencemen last year, as he netted eight goals and 38 points in 65 regular season games and seven points in 11 playoff games.
Tuesday’s trade leaves Sobry, Hunter Laing and newly acquired import Tristan Petersen as Saskatoon’s three overage players for the 2026-27 WHL season.
The Blades also announced on Tuesday the schedule for their 2026 training camp, which will return to SaskTel Centre after last year’s camp was held at the Martensville Recreation Centre.
Four teams will hit the ice on Aug. 28 with the camp running through to Aug. 30. It will culminate with the Kirkness Cup, named after former dressing room attendant Bobby Kirkness who died in 2021 after a battle with cancer.
Teams will be named after Blades alumni Wade Belak, Mike Green, Clayton Chappell, and Andrey Makarov.
