RCMP investigating suspicious death after house fire on Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation

The Saskatchewan RCMP’s homicide unit is investigating after human remains were discovered inside a home on the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation following a fire.

According to police, officers were called to the scene of a house fire on the First Nation northeast of Prince Albert on the morning of July 26.

“During a search of the residence after the fire, the fire scene investigator located human remains,” the Saskatchewan RCMP said in a statement.

“Subsequent investigation, in coordination with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, has determined the death is suspicious in nature. Investigators continue to work with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service to confirm the identity of the deceased.”

The RCMP said its homicide unit has taken charge of the investigation, but noted that no further details could be shared.

“We are unable to provide additional information about this investigation at this time,” the police force added. “Updates will be provided when available. If an imminent risk to public safety is identified, we will notify the public.”

Anyone with information on the death, or any information that could help further the investigation, was asked to contact the Saskatchewan RCMP or make a report anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
