Saskatoon police briefs: Evading police, weapons and outstanding warrants

Saskatoon police made several arrests on Wednesday and Thursday involving drivers alleged to have been evading police, outstanding warrants and weapon-related offences.

A man who police said fled a traffic stop on Wednesday night was arrested after allegedly evading police. Police said man fled from a stop in the area of Dagnone Crescent and Brighton Gate “at a high rate of speed” and “evaded police for a short distance before colliding with city infrastructure” around McOrmond Drive and Stensrud Road.

Police said the man was found to be wanted on several warrants. The 22 year old is also being charged with obstruction, evading police, dangerous driving and breaching court-imposed conditions.

Two arrested for weapons offences

Early on Thursday morning, around 1:30 a.m., police responded to the 300 block of Avenue E South after a report that a person had a gun.

“Additional information provided to police indicated that a man had flashed a firearm that was tucked into his waistband,” a police release stated.

A man matching the description of the suspect was walking near 20th Street West and Avenue D South with a woman. The 27-year-old man was arrested and found to have an imitation firearm and machete, according to police.

The 18-year-old woman the man was with was also found to be wanted on a warrant and police said she had a machete. She was also arrested.

Both are facing weapons-related charges and charges for breaching court-imposed conditions.

Winnipeg man charged with assault after alleged machete attack

Saskatoon police officers responded to a report of an assault in progress on Wednesday night, after getting a report saying someone had been attacked with a machete.

When police responded to the 800 block of Avenue O South, officers found a man “suffering from non-life-threatening injuries consistent with a machete attack.”

Police said an investigation showed that there had been a confrontation between two parties that knew each other, which led to the victim being inured. Multiple people left the scene before police arrived.

Five minutes later, officers tried to stop a vehicle in the area that did not have a visible license plate.

“Upon activating the police vehicle’s emergency equipment, the vehicle did not stop and began to evade at a high rate of speed. Officers disengaged from the evade police incident,” police said.

Officers were then called to a single-vehicle collision shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Thursday in the area of 71st Street East and Rose Avenue. A man, who police said was later identified as the driver, was found next to a badly damaged vehicle.

“Through investigation, officers determined that this was the same suspect who had evaded police earlier and was also believed to be present during the incident involving the machete,” police noted.

The 24-year-old suspect from Winnipeg is now facing charges of evading police and dangerous driving. Saskatoon police are still investigating.
