What started out as a routine traffic stop because of a licence plate covered in mud, quickly became a very serious situation, according to Corman Park’s police chief.
Rob Duttchen said around 1 p.m. on June 26, an officer stopped a black GMC Sierra on Highway 16 just northwest of SaskTel Centre because of an obscured licence plate.

After the truck pulled over, the officer noticed a baby girl in the back of the vehicle who wasn’t properly secured in a car seat, and he offered to show the parents how to do that. They agreed.
As the officer opened the door to the back of the truck, he noticed what appeared to be a gun, next to a machete in plain view.

A firearms expert was called to the scene and confirmed it was a .22 calibre rifle.
Duttchen said the man in the vehicle also had a lifetime firearm ban issued in 2021. Un-stamped tobacco and cannabis were also found in the vehicle.
He was arrested and taken to the Martensville RCMP detachment.
His name hasn’t been released, but he’s facing charges of possession of a firearm contrary to a firearms prohibition order, possession of cannabis, and possession of un-stamped tobacco.
He’s since been released, but is scheduled to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court in August.
Police also seized the machete and found a Karambit knife.
