Dozens of families nominated Knisley, and parents at the school shared stories that reflected her kindness from delivering treats to students who were ill and could not attend the Christmas concert to going above and beyond to help children take part in Mother’s Day and Father’s Day activities.
“I still feel like I’m dreaming, to be honest,” Knisley said after receiving the award.
“I love what I do and to have this kind of recognition and to see so many people that I love and that apparently love me, it was very, very touching.”
Knisley called the title “the honour of a lifetime,” and said for as long as she can remember she has always wanted to be a teacher.
“To do what you love to do and to get this kind of recognition just because you love doing something is unreal.”
Knisley started working at the school in September 1994 and received the job offer the day after her daughter was born, noting it has been a fulfilling career.
When asked if there was a moment from her teaching career that reminded her of why she chose the profession, Knisley said it is the more challenging students that touch her heart.
“At the end of the year they’re crying or they say ‘Mrs. Knisley I’m going to miss you,’ and you think maybe I have a little hard on them at times … but they still love you or they know that they’re loved,” she said.
Knisley said her “amazing” parents helped shape her into the educator she is today.
“My dad was extremely patient to the point where he drives my mom crazy, I think,” she said, noting her family has always supported her teaching journey.
“I’ve had some great educators as well growing up, so a combination of family and other teachers probably were who inspired me most.”
Knisley said she wants to remind every student who enters her classroom to know that they are loved.
“Always strive to be a little bit better, be the best you can be,” she said.
“I hope every student of mine leaves knowing that this lady loved them and that they’re important.”
The prize includes $2,000 for the teacher to use as they wish and a bonus $500 towards their classroom.
C95 is the sister station to 650 CKOM.
