While the May long weekend got off to a cold and snowy start, staff at one Waskesiu business said plenty of visitors still found a reason to come up north.
Amy Hadley, the food and beverage manager for the Waskesiu Golf Course, said the clubhouse opened at 5 p.m. on Friday and stayed open throughout the long weekend.

Despite the golf course itself being closed due to the weather, Hadley said it was still “a very, very busy weekend.”
Hadley said she didn’t quite know what to expect, as it was the opening weekend for the clubhouse, which was revitalized and freshened up for the summer. She said a new menu, designed by Saskatchewan chef Jenni Lessard, was also introduced.
“People were very happy to be here,” Hadley said. “It was cold and snowy, so being in our warm clubhouse was the perfect thing.”
Hadley said it was a quieter than the typical May long weekend, a fact she put down to the road conditions and the fact water is not currently connected to many cabins in the area.
Despite the chilly start to the weekend which typically marks the start of summer, she said she is hoping for a busy season, and said businesses in the area are ready to welcome visitors.
“We’re hoping the sun keeps on shining and all the snow melts and that people come up to Waskesiu and just enjoy everything that it has to offer – the trails, the businesses, the beautiful beach, the great places to eat (and) the famous golf course,” Hadley said.
“We can’t fight mother nature. There’s nothing we could do about that,” she added.
“We’re just going to move forward and be excited for the summer.”
