It’s a tournament University of Saskatchewan Huskies star Gage Grassick has played in several times before, running onto the court at U Sports women’s basketball nationals.
Like they’ve done for so many years, early nerves were replaced with execution and strong defensive play Thursday to help the Huskies advance to national semifinals.

“The first quarter, everyone is nervous and you get your feet under you,” Grassick said.
“That second quarter, we were just able to build off of being here before and being in this position.”
The Huskies downed their Canada West rivals in the UBC Thunderbirds in their first game of nationals in Quebec City, Que. on Thursday 71-55 with a strong back half of the game.

Grassick led the way with a team-high 25 points on the night, being named the Huskies’ player of the game in the process.
According to Grassick, it’s a push to prove themselves from which they’re drawing inspiration.
“We’ve been totally in a different position especially being in the wildcard,” Grassick said.
“We made it naturally last year going in as the number one seed. Being able to play with a little bit of a chip on your shoulder this year and being in a totally different position, it was a fun first game.”
The Huskies now prepare to take on the eighth-seeded Laval Rouge et Or in semifinal action today after a stunning upset Thursday by the host program over the top-ranked TMU Bold 57-54.
It was a reminder for the Huskies of how thin the margins are between advancing and going home.
“Every team who is playing here in March is a team that deserves to be here,” Grassick said. “It’s anyone’s game at any point.”
Named a first team all-Canadian for the second year in a row, Grassick is hoping to push her Huskies career one more game with a win on Thursday for a shot at playing for a national championship.
With her U Sports career winding to an end in a matter of days, the Prince Albert product is trying to stay focused on the task at hand while taking in her final few quarters as a Huskie.
“I’m trying to not think about it,” Grassick said. “At the same time, (I’ll) soak up every moment and have a real appreciation every time I step onto the court counting down the time that I’ll be able to wear the Huskies jersey.”
The Huskies and Rouge et Or will meet at 4 p.m., with the winner advancing to Sunday’s U Sports national championship game against either New Brunswick or Calgary.
