“Email services have changed dramatically since alumni accounts were first offered and most alumni prefer free alternatives like Gmail or Apple Mail,” the university said in a statement, noting alumni were notified of the change two months ahead.
According to the U of S, up to 5,000 students graduate every year, adding to the thousands of accounts being maintained annually. The university also notes licensing models now require a fee-per-user, driving costs beyond budget.
An increased risk of threats, phishing attacks and inappropriate use is another reason behind the decision the U of S said, stating discontinuing alumni emails can help protect institutional data.
“Although mostly dormant, approximately 17 per cent of our living alumni community maintain some use of their USask alumni email account,” the university said.
“Of this 17 per cent, approximately one per cent expressed extraordinary hardship at the announcement to discontinue alumni email service.”
The university said users have the option to extend their email access until Dec. 31 for a $50 fee. Currently, 257 people have opted for the email extension.
