Greg Nichol and the team at the Gordie Howe Sports Complex have been dealing with a wide range of weather phenomena this winter – everything from freezing rain, extreme cold warnings, blowing snow and random warmups.
Nichol said that despite all of this, they’ve found ways to work around when Mother Nature is throwing curveballs.
“We had those cold temperatures there for a few days, and unfortunately we had some issues with the ice. We had a change in temperatures up to minus 50 there, so there was a lot of cracking on the oval,” he said.
“So we had some guys out there taking their time and filling in the cracks with slush and ice. But yeah, that’s kind of all we could do, we couldn’t take the Zamboni out with it being that cold,” said Nichol.
Fast forward to this week and Nichol said he’ll be dealing with a serious warmup.
“We have lines for our speed skaters down on the ice for their track. So if it’s sunny, it’ll start to kind of melt where the lines are. But at the end of the day, I’ll be able to put cones out for the public to skate around if need be,” he said.
“I don’t think we’ll be having any issues. I think people will be able to come out and enjoy the nice weather and be able to skate,” said Nichol.
Despite everything this winter has thrown at him and the team, Nichol said that they’ll weather the storm and make sure the rink is in tip-top shape for anyone wanting to get out on the ice.
“It’s a challenge every year for us, but we have a great staff here, and we continue to just get out there, and if there’s anything to do out on the ice, we’re out there fixing it,” he said.
“Our main goal is to get that safe for the public and come out and enjoy it. So, yeah, it’s a battle every year, but we do a great job with it,” said Nichol.
