The shift from 2025 to 2026 is fast approaching.
People everywhere will be waiting for that annual countdown that signifies the start of a new year, the start of those New Year’s resolutions, and the start of a new chapter.

But ahead of that countdown, SGI is asking that you have a plan to get home safely so you can start the new year off safe and healthy.
“New Year’s is upon us, and that’s a great time of year and a great evening that we’re heading out. We’ve got plans with friends and family, but if you are heading out and your plans include alcohol, cannabis, or anything else that impairs you, we just want to remind people to get a safe ride home,” said SGI’s spokesperson Heather Hubic.
She said that there are many great options people can take to get home, rather than getting behind the wheel.
“Maybe you’re designating a sober driver within your group, or you’re volunteering to be one,” she said.
“You can call or text a sober friend or family member to come and get you at the end of the night, or maybe make those plans even further in advance to have that safe ride home,” said Hubic.
“There are cabs, ride shares, designated driving services, and public transit, and of course, you can always stay the night at a trusted family or friend’s house if a safe ride home isn’t an option,” she said.
While fun and exciting, Hubic said that the holidays can be a dangerous time of the year.
“The opportunity for impaired driving really increases around the holidays,” she said.
“There are more opportunities when you’re going out and you’re having those drinks with family and friends and maybe taking part in some of those impairing activities,” said Hubic.
If spending money for a ride or relying on a friend or family member just isn’t an option, the City of Saskatoon is making sure everyone can get home for this holiday.
Saskatoon Transit has announced that they will be offering free evening bus service on New Year’s Eve.
Free fare service will be available on Wednesday, Dec. 31, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., with times varying by route. Registered Access Transit customers will also have the opportunity to reserve free service until 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 1.
