SPS said the man began “experiencing medical distress” around 9:30 a.m. after having been brought in after reported assaults in the 300 block of Avenue Q South.
Police said the Serious Assault Unit is conducting an investigation after police were called about the assaults of a woman aged 40 and a five-year-old girl around 8:50 a.m. the same morning.
SPS said any further information would be released by SIRT.
SIRT is a civilian-led, independent body that investigates incidents where a person has died or suffered serious injury arising from the actions of on and off-duty police officers, or while in the custody of police, as well as allegations of sexual assault or interpersonal violence involving police.
Final reports into SIRT investigations are issued to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.
More details from SIRT
According to a release from SIRT, when SPS took the 35-year-old man into custody, there was a “brief physical struggle.”
Upon arrival at the SPS headquarters, SIRT said there was a second physical struggle and the man was put inside a cell.
“Almost immediately after he was placed inside the cell, the male was observed to be in medical distress,” SIRT said.
He was immediately removed from the cell and first aid was provided by police and paramedics.
“Additional EMS personnel arrived at SPS headquarters and attempted life-saving measures on the male, but at approximately 10:08, the male was pronounced deceased,” SIRT said.
The SPS Serious Assault Unit maintains its responsibility for the investigation of the male’s actions leading up to his arrest, including the alleged weapon assault related to the five-year-old and the 40-year-old woman.
SIRT said no further details will be shared at this time and a final report will be made to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.
