Driver was using phone, in wrong lane during crash with police vehicle: RCMP

A driver has been ticketed after a crash that left two people – including an RCMP officer – hospitalized in June.

According to the RCMP, a truck collided with a marked RCMP vehicle on Highway 15 near the rodeo grounds on the Muskowekwan First Nation at around 11 a.m. on June 4.

The police officer, who was the only occupant of the RCMP vehicle, was airlifted to hospital by STARS with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening. The truck driver, who was also alone in the vehicle, was taken to hospital by paramedics.

“As a result of continued investigation, Punnichy RCMP determined the truck was driving on the wrong lane of the highway and that the driver was using a cell phone at the time of the collision,” the RCMP said in an update issued on Wednesday.

“The driver, an adult male, has been issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention.”

The RCMP thanked members of the public who sent get-well messages to the injured officer, “who continues their recovery.”
