Household hazardous waste is accepted every Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the recovery centre.
The last drop-off day of the year will be on Oct. 29.
“The household hazardous waste collection program is designed to make it easier for residents to dispose of items that should not be thrown in regular garbage or recycling bins due to their potential harm to the environment and public health,” the City of Saskatoon said in a statement.
Accepted items include aerosols, automotive fluids, cleaners, cylinders, light bulbs, yard chemicals and more. Complete lists of acceptable and unacceptable items can be found on the city’s website.
The city encouraged residents to take advantage of the free service to ensure these materials are handled in an environmentally responsible manner.
Residents were reminded that the program is not open for commercial use, and containers used for transporting hazardous waste may not be returned. The city asked that all containers be safely sealed and clearly marked.
“Batteries are one of the most commonly dropped off items at household hazardous waste drop-off days,” the city added. “As a note, they are accepted daily for free at Sort & Go at the Material Recovery Centre.”
