As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
That’s definitely the case today, with Saskatoon’s annual “Curbside Swap” event going on until 6 p.m. today.
The city is hoping to drum up interest by statements like, “Swap it like it’s hot!” as posted on their Facebook page.
According to the City of Saskatoon, the aim is to reduce the amount of garbage going into the local landfill, and to encourage recycling with events like the swap.

Katie Burns, with the city’s sustainability team, said treasure hunters can scour the city for “gently used” items that people put out on the curb, with a sign indicating they’re free for the taking.
“It could be appliances, bicycles, tools, furniture, books, CDs, if you still have them. Kitchen utensils, building materials, computers, electronics, yard and garden equipment,” she said.
Those who wish to put out items can find the event and details on the Saskatoon Facebook page and post pictures and their address for reference. They can remove their information once the items are claimed, or when the 10-hour event is over.
Typically, Burns said, there are hundreds of listings each year.
“We do see quite high participation, and folks really do like it,” she said.
The Facebook page hopes participants will “feel good” by helping reduce landfill waste and finding “some sweet goods at the same time.”
