The grass fire was quickly brought under control by firefighters from Buckland Fire and Rescue, the RCMP added.
Larry Bird, a 35-year-old resident of the Little Red River First Nation, was arrested at the scene. He’s facing a charge of arson with damage to property, along with breaching a probation order and a conditional sentence order that barred him from possessing a lighter or other incendiary devices.
Bird was remanded into custody and was expected to appear in court in Prince Albert on Friday morning.
“Situations like this are gravely concerning, especially in light of the devastating fire season Northern Saskatchewan has experienced,” Sgt. Dan Lozinski of the Prince Albert RCMP said in a statement.
The case is not the first time an arson charge has been laid in relation to a wildfire in Saskatchewan this summer.
Last Friday, the RCMP announced that a 29-year-old man from La Ronge was facing an arson charge after allegedly setting a wildfire that resulted in the evacuation of several communities.
