The RCMP says a routine traffic stop led to the seizure of 100,000 illegal cigarettes last week.
According to the Saskatchewan RCMP, officers were conducting traffic safety patrols on Highway 16 on Thursday, and a van was pulled over for a driver’s licence check at about 3 p.m.

During the stop, the RCMP said officers found 10 cases of illegal cigarettes in the van. The driver was arrested and now faces charges of possession of tobacco products for the purpose of selling, possession of unstamped tobacco and possession of unstamped tobacco that is not black stock tobacco.
The 47-year-old Moose Jaw man is scheduled to appear in court in Lloydminster on Jan. 11.
“Tobacco suppliers including manufacturers of tobacco in Saskatchewan, importers of tobacco for commercial purposes and wholesalers of tobacco to retailers must be licensed to collect and remit tax,” the Saskatchewan government said in a bulletin on its website.
“Retailers are also required to obtain a licence to operate in Saskatchewan.”
