TORONTO — Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:
Earnings and the stock market
The steady stream of third-quarter earnings reports from the biggest names in corporate Canada continues this week. The financial results come after technology stocks sold off on Friday amid worries about the billions being spent on AI and concerns the money being spent on chips and data centres may not be worth it.
Macklem at committee
Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem and senior deputy governor Carolyn Rogers are at the House of Commons standing committee on finance on Tuesday. The appearance comes after the central bank raised its policy interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 2.5 per cent.
Trade numbers
Statistics Canada will report September merchandise trade figures on Wednesday. The data comes after trade talks between Canada and the United States fell apart in August and the U.S. imposed a fresh round of tariffs, followed by counter-tariffs by Canada.
Federal budget
Federal Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne will deliver his budget on Thursday. Prime Minister Mark Carney has been focused on an aggressive infrastructure agenda to build the economy in the face of U.S. tariffs and geopolitical changes.
Job numbers
Statistics Canada will offer its latest snapshot of the job market on Friday when it releases its labour force survey for October. The economy lost 68,000 jobs in September as the unemployment rate increased 0.1 percentage points to 6.5 per cent.
