WINNIPEG — Scott Gillingham was re-elected as the mayor of Winnipeg on Wednesday after a campaign largely dominated by issues ranging from housing to public safety.
Unofficial results showed Gillingham received 80,206 votes to send him to a second term, while former legislature member and city councillor Kevin Klein drew 41,703 votes.
Software developer Noah Redden came in third place with 39,962 votes, and funeral home director Mike Vogiatzakis received 19,463.
Supporters cheered as Gillingham claimed victory late Wednesday.
“Tonight you have given me the honour of serving as your mayor once again,” he told those gathered at a watch party. “Thank you, Winnipeg. I will never take your trust for granted.”
Gillingham said the city’s best days are still ahead. He’s vowed to find solutions to the multitude of issues plaguing the city, such as homelessness, addictions, mental health and crime.
There are many reasons to be optimistic about Winnipeg, Gillingham said, noting new home builds and infrastructure, and revitalizing the city’s downtown.
He said he wants to build on that momentum over the next four years.
“So whether you voted for me or not, I want you to know that I will be your mayor too. My door will be open, your voice will matter and I’ll work every day to make this city better for your family and my family,” he said.
Klein, who owns newspapers including the Winnipeg Sun, congratulated Gillingham in a concession speech at the Norwood Hotel.
He said he was humbled by the support he received and that there would be a news conference Friday to wrap up his campaign and announce his next steps.
Klein previously had an unsuccessful run at the city’s top job in 2022.
Almost all other Manitoba communities also held elections Wednesday, except for the resort areas of Winnipeg Beach, Dunnottar and Victoria Beach, which held votes in July.
