EDMONTON — Canada’s military says soldiers killed and injured while training at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright were caught up in sudden windstorm that overwhelmed them in flames at unbelievable speed.
Maj. Gen Wade Rutland says the fire had been burning for a while, but it was considered far enough away and contained that training could continue.
He says when the storm kicked up, the flames moved a kilometre in about 30 seconds and overwhelmed the soldiers.
Premier Danielle Smith says alongside the four soldiers who died, that 39 more were injured, and 19 of those are in critical condition.
Rutland says they are not sure how the fire started and he says it could be weeks before they determine it.
The four dead have been identified as soldiers from B.C, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
