Historic Yorkton Brick Flour Mill opens new interpretive centre

Saskatchewan’s newest tourist destination helped build the province, one loaf of bread at a time.

The Yorkton Brick Flour Mill Interpretive Centre opened to the public Wednesday, thanks in part to a $600,000 contribution from the provincial government, as well as $1.1 million from the federal government, $300,000 from the City of Yorkton and $40,000 from Tourism Saskatchewan and local fundraising initiatives.

“Completing the interpretive centre at the Yorkton Flour Mill has been a wonderful journey, made possible by the generosity, hard work and belief of so many people,” Yorkton Brick Mill Heritage Society president Larry Pearen said.

In a statement, the government described the centre as “an educational hub featuring artifacts, exhibits and displays that bring the region’s agricultural history to life.”

“This iconic landmark is a cherished part of Yorkton’s history and Saskatchewan’s agricultural heritage,” said Alana Ross, the minister responsible for Tourism Saskatchewan.

“It is an important part of our story that has been preserved through the extensive and ongoing efforts of the community, and our government is pleased to have joined with them, provided support and helped the society complete the project. The stories of early family farms will continue to be told while supporting the local tourism sector.”

The mill operated from 1890 to 1989 and is the “only remaining brick-constructed flour mill” in the province, according to the government.

After ceasing operations, the mill changed hands several times. Efforts to preserve it began in the early 2000s, and the City of Yorkton took ownership of the building in 2009.

It is a designated municipal heritage property, and is operated by the Yorkton Brick Mill Heritage Society.

“The Yorkton Flour Mill tells an important Saskatchewan story rooted in agriculture, innovation and adding value to our crops at home,” Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit said.

“This interpretive centre preserves that history while highlighting the continued importance of agriculture and food processing to Yorkton and our province.”
