It’s a bad weekend to be a crow in a small Saskatchewan town.
The annual Lumsden Scarecrow Festival is presenting wacky and wonderful bird-scarers to front yards on Saturday.

The community 30 kilometres northwest of Regina has over 100 displays put out by scarecrow enthusiasts.
A large dark villain out of the popular video game Minecraft towers over Adam Tropin’s street.

His kids came up with the idea to build the Enderman with glowing eyes to haunt scarecrow-enjoyers.
“It’s something our family really enjoys,” Tropin said. “We enjoy putting one up, something that’s going to be either interesting for people or funny. We like putting a little bit of work into it.”
The Enderman was built with wood, boxes and black spray paint.
“It’s a cool community event,” Tropin said. “We get in a car and we go downtown. We grab an ice cream, we drive around and check out all the scarecrows. It’s cool to be involved in it.”
Ian Bruce has made the birds worst nightmare.

He took a couple of free walking pads and made his own scarecrow factory.
“It’s been sitting in the garage since about March, and then through the summer I thought, hmm, we can probably use this,” he said.
One walking pad has stalks of straw entering the factory Bruce built and exits out the other side with a grinning scarecrow.

Bruce said often reuses his materials from years past. The factory is made out of an alien invasion scarecrow display he assembled the year before.
“It’s just so much fun,” he said. “It’s a nice farewell to summer. I mean, our town’s so awesome. It’s great to see people out and doing stuff.”

It doesn’t matter what the scarecrow looks like – it’s just got to frighten the flocks away.
