Two women charged after guns found in stolen SUV in Nipawin: RCMP

Two women are facing criminal charges after three guns were found inside a stolen SUV in Nipawin, police say.

According to the Saskatchewan RCMP, officers in Nipawin spotted an SUV with a plate that did not match its registration on Sunday, but when they tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver fled.

Police said officers spotted three people sitting inside the same SUV, which was parked outside a home on Seventh Avenue West, on Tuesday. The RCMP said two of the three occupants — a man and a woman — took off on foot when police activated their lights. The man was able to get away, police said, while the woman was arrested along with another woman who was still inside the vehicle.

“During a subsequent search of the SUV, Nipawin RCMP located and seized three firearms, ammunition, and a mask,” the Mounties said in a statement.

“Nipawin RCMP also determined the SUV was previously reported as stolen in Prince Albert, SK.”

The RCMP said the two women — a 45-year-old from Carrot River and a 37-year-old from Cumberland House — were each charged with possession of property obtained by crime and eight separate gun charges. The Carrot River woman was also charged with two counts of breaching conditions of a release order and resisting or obstructing a peace officer, and was also found to be wanted on an outstanding warrant.

Both women appeared in court in Nipawin on Wednesday.

“Nipawin RCMP continue to investigate, which includes working to identify and locate the male suspect,” the RCMP noted.

Saskatoon-area police remove 40 impaired drivers over long weekend

A campaign by 14 police agencies in the Saskatoon area removed 40 drivers from the road for drug or alcohol consumption during the Labour Day weekend.

According to a statement from the RCMP, officers checked 1,509 vehicles in “multi-agency traffic safety operations.”

“These results show that impaired driving remains a serious concern on Saskatchewan roads. Through these collaborative operations, officers removed 40 drivers who had consumed alcohol or drugs before getting behind the wheel,” said Inspector Lee Knelsen, operations officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services.

“Every impaired driver taken off the road helps prevent potential tragedies. We will continue working with our partners to promote safe driving and help keep our roads safe.”

The initiative led to 348 warnings and 245 tickets being issued to drivers. Thirty-eight drivers were suspended and saw their vehicles impounded for consuming drugs or alcohol. Two more were charged with Criminal Code offences for driving while impaired and had their vehicles impounded.

The RCMP said one person was arrested on an outstanding warrant, and one driver was suspended for travelling 174 kilometres per hour in an 80 km/h zone near Rosetown.

Officers also issued inspection notices to the drivers of 15 vehicles.
