Closures coming to Circle Drive, 20th Street W., Spadina, Hart this weekend

Drivers in Saskatoon will need to watch out for detours this weekend, with the city planning closures and lane restrictions on four high-traffic roads.

Road restrictions will be put in place in the eastbound median and centre lanes of Circle Drive South from the Gordie Howe Bridge to Idylwyld Drive South southbound merge lanes from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday while city workers complete “microsurfacing” work.

Microsufracing, a city spokesperson explained in an email, involves applying a mixture of emulsified asphalt and aggregate in order to correct minor imperfections in an otherwise structurally sound road. The treatment creates a protective barrier and also prevents water from infiltrating the asphalt, the city noted, helping to extend the life of the road and minimize the need for expensive treatments down the line.

That project continues at 7 a.m. on Sunday, with the closure of the eastbound curb and centre lanes of the same stretch of Circle Drive. The work is expected to wrap up by 9 p.m.

“This closure includes the Lorne Avenue off ramp from Circle Drive S. One lane will be open for general traffic during this work,” the City of Saskatoon said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the city said Hart Road will be closed from Bowlt Crescent to 22nd Street West between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday for microsurfacing work.

Twentieth Street West will be closed between Avenue D South and Avenue B South from 8 a.m. on Friday to 10 p.m. on Saturday to accommodate the Forkin Around Riversdale event.

Finally, the city said Spadina Crescent will be closed from 20th Street East to 21st Street East from 7 a.m. on Friday until noon on Saturday for the city’s annual Ukrainian Day in the Park event.

“Closure end times are weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances,” the city noted.

The city said Saskatoon Transit routes may be affected by the closures, and encouraged riders to check service alerts and third-party apps for the latest updates.
