Reports of traffic court summons text scam still popping up in Regina

Police in Regina say scammers are still targeting residents with a text message scam claiming victims must appear in court due to an “unpaid traffic citation.”

The Regina Police Service noted that legitimate government agencies don’t ask the public to resolve legal matters through unsolicited texts, and reminded the public to avoid clicking any links included in the messages.

The scam has previously popped up in Regina, as well as Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Carnduff and Indian Head.

Police said the texts state that the recipient has an upcoming court date or needs to pay a fine, and the messages include threats of legal action or arrest. The scammers commonly include a link directing the recipient to “take action” to resolve the issue, or requests for personal financial details.

“If you believe you have an outstanding traffic citation, you can verify by calling the Regina Traffic Safety Court,” the police force noted.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted by fraudsters was advised to contact police immediately.
