Saskatoon police briefs: Man arrested for Ontario murder, security guards attacked

A 20-year-old man wanted for murder in Ontario was arrested by Saskatoon police last week.

The arrest was made in co-operation with the Durham Regional Police, in connection with a 2023 killing. Durham is located in southern Ontario, northeast of Toronto.

According to police, the man was arrested at a business in the 3000 block of Meadows Parkway. During the arrest, a loaded handgun was found.

Durham Regional Police said the man was aged 17 when security guard Michael Ferdinand was shot and killed at Pickering Casino on Oct. 9, 2023.

The man will now be taken back to Ontario to face a charge of second-degree murder.

Security officers attacked

Saskatoon police officers responded to three calls involving security officers being attacked on Sunday, including one alleged incident involving bodily fluids.

According to police, a security guard in the 100 block of Avenue F South in Riversdale asked a woman to leave the area. The officer and the woman had a brief verbal confrontation before the guard returned to his vehicle.

Police said the woman poured a cup of bodily fluids on the vehicle and security worker. The 36-year-old woman was charged with assault as a result.

Earlier that day, police responded to a call saying a man had had assaulted a security guard in the 200 block of Third Avenue North. Police are still looking for the man, and said the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Then, on Sunday afternoon, police responded to a call about an assault at the 200 block of First Avenue South in the city’s downtown core.

According to police, security was called to a business to assist with customers. Two men were arrested by police for allegedly attacking a security worker, and both have been charged with assault.

Man hospitalized after stabbing on Wednesday

A 20-year-old man was hospitalized after being stabbed early on Wednesday morning.

According to police, officers were called to the 500 block of Fourth Avenue North at around 12:30 a.m. for a report of an injured man.

“The victim reported being stabbed approximately an hour earlier, while in the area of 20th Street West and Avenue H South.  He told officers that two women had approached him, demanded his bag and then stabbed him before fleeing,” police said in a statement.

“The victim did not have a description for the women.  He is being treated for what is believed to be a non life-threatening injury.”

Multiple stabbings reported over weekend

Four separate stabbing incidents also kept Saskatoon police officers busy over the past few days.

On Friday, police responded to a weapons call in the 200 block of Avenue K South. Police said officers received information that a man had stabbed another man, and the suspect was last seen in the 1100 block of 20th Street West.

Officers located a the suspect and arrested him, also seizing a knife. The 25-year-old has been charged with breaching conditions, assault with a weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Police said officers also found the 40-year-old man who had been stabbed. He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Saturday evening, police responded to a report of a stabbing near 21st Street West and Avenue I South.

Officers found the victim in the area and he was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Then, on Sunday morning, police received information that a person had attempted to stab another person in the 200 block of Avenue U South.

According to police, the victim had asked the suspect to leave the property. The suspect then assaulted and attempted to stab the victim, resulting in non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are still looking for the suspect. He was described as a man who was wearing blue Under Armour shoes, a blue backpack, a black coat and blue jeans. It is believed the suspect and victim know each other.

Then, on Sunday afternoon, police were called about an injured person near 20th Street and Avenue H South. Police said a man had been stabbed and that the suspect had left the scene.

A 40-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
