Kazi, the snow leopard who delighted visitors at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo, was euthanized over the weekend after the animal’s health declined.
The animal, which was born at the Toronto Zoo and arrived in Saskatoon from the Edmonton Valley Zoo, turned 19 earlier this month.

“Kazi had been closely monitored by the Zoo’s animal care and veterinary teams as his health declined due to advanced age,” the City of Saskatoon said in a statement.
“After careful and ongoing assessment of his condition and quality of life, the difficult decision was made to euthanize him.”

The city said zoo staff and visitors alike will miss the snow leopard, who was often seen resting high on his wooden structure or tucked underneath it. While Kazi’s elusive nature and camouflaged coat occasionally made him hard to spot, the city said he made visits to the zoo special and memorable for many guests.
“Caring for animals also means making difficult decisions when their quality of life declines,” zoo manager Jeff Mitchell said in a statement.
“This was not a decision made lightly. Our team cared deeply for Kazi and we are grateful to the animal care and veterinary professionals who supported him with compassion every step of the way.”
