It was a wild night of weather on Sunday as storms blanketed southeast Saskatchewan, bringing funnel clouds, strong winds, large hail and plenty of rain to the region.
Environment Canada issued a tornado alert shortly after 6:30 p.m., with some Regina residents getting the warning message on their phones and TVs. Meteorologist Kyle McAulay said no tornadoes have been reported, but funnel clouds were spotted in Storthoaks, Saint Antoine and Redvers, northeast of Estevan.

“There were many storms, lots of lightning and lots of activity in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan,” said McAulay.
Hail the size of golf balls was spotted in Balgonie, just east of Regina, and in Antler, near the Manitoba border. Toonie-sized hail was reported in MacNutt, east of Yortkon.
“Luckily, a lot of these were in pretty open areas, so not too populated,” McAulay said.
“So far there’s no major, widespread damage, but I’m sure there are a few single cases of maybe some car damage or crop damage from the large-sized hail.”
However, McAulay said there were reports of strong winds and wind damage in some areas. He said Estavan recorded 111 km/h wind gusts.
“Pretty powerful stuff,” said McAulay.

He said he’s also seen photos of a Co-op Cardlock sign damaged in Carlyle, while a video shared on social media showed what appears to be an equipment shed knocked down by the high winds in the community southeast of Regina.
“We might try to estimate the winds later on, but we’re going to call it severe winds, probably over 90 km/h to 110 km/h that we were seeing in other places,” McAulay said.
While there haven’t been any reports of flooding in Saskatchewan after the storm, the meteorologist said there was some localized flooding in Manitoba, just south of Swan River, near the Saskatchewan border, after 12 centimetres of rain fell in a three-hour period.
